Am Wochenende des 16. und 17. März findet im Spektral in Graz ein Open Data Hackathon und ein OpenCamp statt.

Das Prinzip der “Offenheit”, englisch “openness”, begegnet uns in immer mehr Bereichen der Technik, Kultur und Gesellschaft. “Open Source” – offene, für jeden veränderbare Software – machte den Anfang. Es folgen u.a. offene Standards im Internet und im World Wide Web, Open Innovation – die Beteiligung der Außenwelt an Innovationsprozessen -, Open Access und Open Science – der freie Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Publikationen und zur Forschung -, Open Data und Open Government – die Zugänglichkeit und Benutzbarkeit von Regierungs- und Verwaltungsinformationen für alle Bürger.

Oft sind sie den geschlossenen Systemen überlegen – vor allem, wenn Innovation gefragt ist und wenn die Komplexität der Umwelt wächst.

The 46th Hawaiian International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) will be happening from 7-10th January on Wailea, Hawaii. The minitrack “Social Media and Social Networking” as part of the track Electronic Government is open to papers that cover all aspects of social networking, especially in the context of electronic government.

Social media and networks have received a lot of attention in the last decade. As a result, new ways of communication procedures have been established in society. Social media increase the opportunities for individual users to share digitally created content and ideas. Recently, the role of the Internet for social movements, in particular Middle Eastern affairs and the Arab Spring, has been discussed, where activists and bloggers use interactive media and social networks to influence events on the ground. Governments have also discovered the potential of social media sites for sharing governmental information and outreach. Many citizens already appreciate the comfort of the Internet communication and the demand for easy and fast web services is growing. At the same time, issues related to privacy, information leakage, blurred boundaries and online addiction must be addressed when discussing social media.

This minitrack is open to papers that cover all aspects of social networking, especially in the context of electronic government.
